Understand how product sensitivity, shelf life, sealing, durability, and distribution shape a flexible packaging structure.

There is no universal structure

A flexible packaging structure is selected around the product and the way the finished pack will be filled, stored, shipped, opened, and used. The same pouch format can require different layers for a dry snack, coffee, powder, or pet food product.

Common considerations include oxygen, moisture, aroma, light, puncture risk, seal integrity, temperature, and the intended shelf-life target. These inputs should be confirmed before a final material recommendation is made.

How the layers work together

The printable outer layer supports graphics and handling. Barrier layers help reduce exposure to oxygen, moisture, aroma transfer, or light when the product requires it. Structural and sealant layers contribute to strength, machinability, and reliable sealing.

Material names alone do not define performance. The final laminate, thickness, sealing conditions, filling equipment, and distribution environment all matter, so a project-specific specification is essential.

Questions for a first material review

Be ready to share the product type, fill weight, shelf-life target, filling method, storage conditions, distribution route, and any existing package or test information. If some answers are not known, mark them as open items instead of guessing.
